WHAT IS BLOODSTONE (HELIOTROPE) MEANING

The name heliotrope is derived from Greek “helios” meaning «sun” and “trope” meaning “direction”. It is called a green variety of chalcedony with bright red spots or stripes oxidized hematite. A stone with this name was already mentioned in the writings of Pliny (I in. N. E.).

In the Middle Ages with the characteristic blemishes blemishes identified the blood of Jesus Christ, and the stone was called a “blood” stone.

    A MASSIVE variety of CHALCEDONY that is a green PLASMA speckled with red spots resembling blood (due to oxidizing of the green).
    It has been used as a stone for a SEAL, and also in the Middle Ages as an AMULET to prevent loss of blood. The red spots on some stones have been utilized on some CAMEOS to indicate drops of blood on carved figures of Christ, especially in Italy in the 16th century.

    The stone is also called HELIOTROPE and bloodstone jasper, and has sometimes been miscalled HEMATITE, probably because the German word Blutstein refers to hematite.
